Calling.

The scriptures take us this week to Mark 2:13-3:12. Lots of stuff about calling and evangelism and topics to discuss. Today, I'm thinking calling. The text starts with the calling of Levi (or Matthew). Jesus is walking by, sees him, and says -- "Follow me." Keep in mind, they are in Capernaum, where Jesus many think had a residence. (Check out 2:1 -- many heard He had come home) Imagine for a minute Jesus' bachelor pad. I've got lots of thoughts there -- another time. He invites Levi to follow him home, where Jesus is throwing a dinner party for the unsavory folk of the day -- tax collectors and sinners. Think patio, the grill is fired up, folks hanging out by the garden rail, talking over the fence...Says that Levi left everything and followed him. Didn't pack up for the day, just up and went. Radical. That is answering a call. It wasn't even the call to come to ministry, just to dinner. We know where it led eventually (check out the first book of the New Testament), but the words show that Levi responded to what Jesus asked without apparent hesitation.

What have you been called to? I think I have tried at times to run from my calling, pushing on it, trying to get out of it; but when I settle down and embrace what I'm made to do, it feels right. There is peace, there is confidence, and conviction that I'm walking on the path God has laid out for me. What about you -- where has God called you? What road it before you? Where are you in the process -- answering, resisting, running the other way? What will it take to get you settled down and about the business of 'going'?
