White as Snow

U2 has a new album out today; "No Line on the Horizon". I'm an unabashed U2 geek; I remember hearing "Joshua Tree" for the first time and having my mind blown; watching "Rattle and Hum" about a million times and subjecting everyone close to me to it (sorry, Mom), and from that point I was hooked. Seeing them in concert a few years ago was the high point of my concert going life, and I'm hoping I can see them this summer on tour provided they come close and I can find extra change in the couch to go. I'm listening to the new record as I type; and this song came on...the melody was haunting and I could not place it. Here is a sampling...

Once I knew there was a love divine

Then came a time when I thought it knew me not

Who can forgive forgiveness where forgiveness is not

Only the lamb as white as snow

Bono is real good a working biblical stuff into his lyrics; he gets knocked for being so outspoken and political and self righteous; in fact, a lot of folks get Bono fatigue pretty quickly. But, for all of the pomp, he seems to have a pretty good grip on who he is in relation to the Savior. Christians love and hate him because he talks the talk and walks the walk, but frequently contradicts it with the way he talks and walks. I kinda like that he is real, he knows he needs saving, and isn't afraid to admit it.

The melody for this song, at least part..."O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" Great choice. Fitting, I think. Only the Lamb, white as snow, willing to come among us, can offer the forgiveness we so desparately need.
