what about hell?
so what about this topic? printing up the apostle's creed for our confirmation kids memory work, thinking of the command to teach it to our kids as part of the baptismal covenant thing, and thinking of how i feel when my daughter says it as part of the creed. as a curse word, obviously not ok. as part of the creed, identifying it as a place, ok; but still a bit squirmy when the kid says it. why do i hestiate when it comes to that part? is it cuz it is a naughty word? or maybe i hesitate as it's a tough thing to explain, even though the question has not been asked yet. interesting to think about...how do you all feel regarding this? any kids asked about it yet? what did you say?
similarly...the song 'stomp on the devil' (old school camp song!) fun song to sing, kids love it mostly cuz they get to jump around...when it comes to explaining what it all means, different story. thoughts?

VERY interesting. I've been struggling with it myself -- recently, the part of the creed "He descended into Hell..." -- Pastor Bob told me that he sees that more as "He was separated from God" -- so Hell=being separated from God. So, yes, we CAN have hell on Earth (if Christ is not in our life). But, also, for eternity, I still do think (no proof, obviously) that there is a PLACE that has an extremely unpleasant environment.
When we have SUPER hot days, we talk about hell -- and can you imagine not having HOPE that it will cool off. Can you imagine not having HOPE that life will get better. Without Christ, we have no HOPE.
hmmm...tough one.
I'm still trying to find the Biblical reference for "He descended into Hell."
