The cost...
everytime we go visit the doctor, brady has one thing on his mind. shots. am i getting one? i don't have to, cuz i had one last year. no shot, right dad? he's not big on the pain of the deal. i think it's a human thing -- pain is low on the totem pole with regard to the things we enjoy. me included.
i was reading last night in philippians 2. one of my fave passages comes in verses 5-11; talking about Jesus taking on the likeness of humanity and what that meant for Him...
Philippians 2:5-11 (The Message)
5-8Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn't think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.
9-11Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father.
amazing stuff to think about...Jesus gave up His God privileges and entered the fray with us as a human. and He chose to stay that way, knowing what lies ahead. pain. suffering. trial. execution. i dread the dentist -- those cleanings are not fun! Jesus knew what was waiting at the end of His road, and yet He wore the humility of humanity in order to secure eternity for us all. pretty profound...
to ponder: what is the greatest pain you've endured? did you know it was coming? how do your kids handle pain? what is your response to them when they tell you they are hurt?
