something to do...

At our house, the word boring was a favorite for a while. Brady, the 4 year old, went through a few months where everything was boring. He didn't have anything to do, it was boring. His movies were boring. His clothes were boring. Everything was boring. I seem to remember saying the exact same thing to my mom (I was older, but...) It's amazing to me how we are so entertained in our lifestyle -- phones that work anywhere, computers that have email and internet and an absurd amount of information and entertainment options in an instant, tv everywhere we go, the radio always there, the list goes on. I'm not knocking any of that stuff -- I'm quite honestly thankful for these things! But it makes me wonder if we are creating boredom in our homes and lives by being SO connected all the time.

Now think about growing up in Jesus' day. None of that stuff existed. Their entertainment options would have been significantly limited back then by our standards today. Their main form of entertainment would have been telling stories -- and not just fairy tales. They were sharing stories about their ancestors, about who they were and where they had come from. And if I had to wager a guess, storytime would have been the part of the day that those kids looked forward to most. And it might have been the stories they were hearing; but even more, I gotta think it was as much about being together.

That's my hope, that's the intent behind this whole ZFam deal. I don't want this to be one more thing to do, one more thing to entertain you and your kids. My prayer is that this can be a spot to come to get ideas, to get tools, to get the things you need to connect with your loved ones on the Jesus level. I'll post devotional readings here for you to use with your kiddos at home. I'll provide info and links to places where you can get good Jesus based stuff for your families. And I'll keep you up to date on things you can do (both physically and spiritually) to continue modelling a life of faith for your little ones. And most of all, I'll be praying for you (and us) as we start down this road of ever deepening connections...

Brent, This looks good. The links to the right look like good resources - I'll definitely have to check them out in more detail when I have more time. Your first entry has already given me an idea too. I am going to try to spend more time telling stories to the kids - not just reading their books, but telling stories about my childhood and about their family. I know Rachel will love to listen. I think that's a good thing to do. I look forward to seeing what else you add as time goes on.
